Sprucing up your smoothies with alternative bases + my review of pHenOH 7.4

Smoothies – my favorite topic – are up on deck today.

Typically, I tend to make my smoothies with bases of water or a non-dairy milk alternative like almond, hemp, quinoa or cashew milk. Then I add in all the other goodies like chia seeds, hemp seeds, avocado (my latest favorite for ultra creaminess), cacao, vegan protein, fruit or berries, veggies and greens, fresh and ground spices… the options are endless. More recently, though, I’ve been playing around more with the base liquid.

After coming down with a terrible cold due to multiple days and nights without heat or hot water in my NYC apartment (don’t even get me started), I was downing extra supplements and good foods to help boost my immune system – elderberry, vitamin C, ginger, vitamin D. Since I usually go through 2-3 packets a day of Emergen-C when I don’t feel so hot, and I generally get the cranberry pomegranate flavor for both the flavor and its female genitourinary benefits, I figured it would make a lovely base to a smoothie… or spoonie (smoothie so thick you need to eat it with a spoon).

Fast forward to a few weeks ago when the Fit Approach team sent me some PHenOH 7.4 to check out. I’m not typically a sports drink kind of gal, not having been into Gatorade since I was a kid playing soccer. When training for my first marathon, I was into the electrolyte tablets that you add to your water. But the past few years of training, I’ve really just stuck to water – only taking a few sips of Gatorade while running the NYC marathon last year. When I do look to replenish my electrolytes, I usually go for a raw coconut water or make a smoothie that has ingredients full of the minerals I’m trying to replace.

The conundrum I had when I received a case of PHenOH alkaline sports drink was how I was going to get through it since I’m not a regular drinker of such beverages. First let me say that I agreed to try out PHenOH 7.4 because it’s not like your typical artificial sports drink full of artificial chemicals and simple sugars. PHenOH contains only 7 natural ingredients, including organic aloe vera and agave nectar, providing potassium, magnesium and vitamin C to help keep your body balanced, promote healthy metabolism and support your immune system. At only 30 calories per 8oz serving, it’s a healthier low-calorie alternative to sports drinks.

So, since like I said I am not a regular drinker of sports drinks and tend to stick to water, tea or kombucha most of the rest of the time (except maybe on Saturday nights), I decided to try out PHenOH 7.4 in a couple of my morning post-workout smoothies. This way, as with the Emergen-C, I could still enjoy the flavor and health benefits but in a form that I prefer. The taste to me, somewhat magically since there is none listed in the ingredients, resembles that of a weak grape juice. A couple of the spoonies I’ve made so far include the 7.4 Spoonie (pictured up top) and a Cacao Cran-Pineapple 7.4 Spoonie.

Since it’s just about Christmas, I’m including all of the recipes for you :)
